HSDB is a pre-K to 12th grade school that serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing students throughout Hawaii. We are a bilingual-bicultural school where students learn and communicate in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Students and staff are able to communicate freely through ASL without an interpreter. Our students are also taught Hawaiian culture and the value of showing ALOHA spirit at all times. In addition to providing our students with the 21st century skills and knowledge they need to successfully pursue a college and/or career upon graduation, we also focus on developing students’ social and emotional skills, to be proud and strong individuals who can successfully face life’s challenges. Stay Connected with HSDB! Upcoming Events There are no upcoming events at this time. News HSDB Receives National ACCREDITATION!!! For the first time in HSDB’s history, HSDB is ACCREDITED!!! On July 1, 2019, the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC) gave HSDB a Six-Year Accreditation Status. HSDB is now one of the few schools for Deaf and hard of hearing students in the U.S. with national accreditation. ... Family Learning Adventure Our annual Family Learning event will happen this weekend, June 29th and 30th, at Camp Mokule’ia. This is a fun-filled educational event for HSDB families. Our key speaker is Sheena McFeely Mansfield. The Mansfields are a family of four that live in Austin, TX who exclusively use the vibrant American Sign Language (ASL) as their ... Schools and Programs Barrier Free Environment HSDB is the only school in Hawaii where students are able to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) directly with their classmates, teachers, educational assistants, administrators, support staff such as counselors, nurses, cafeteria staff, and speech and language pathologists without the need for an interpreter. Our campus is a barrier-free, Deaf-friendly campus where EVERYONE signs. 80% of our teachers, educational assistants, and dormitory staff are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Residential Life At HSDB, students from neighboring island , and students who live in Oahu but live far from the HSDB campus, have the opportunity to reside in a safe and nurturing campus during the week. Residential students participate in after-school activities, receive tutoring services from instructional staff in the evenings. Residential students receive additional instruction in social emotional learning and independent living. Deaf & Hawaiian Cultures HSDB has an ASL department that works with instructional staff and students to insure that students are fluent in their 1st language - ASL. HSDB also teaches Deaf and Hard of Hearing students about Deaf culture. In addition to learning about Deaf culture, our students also learn about Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian history and the importance of living the Aloha spirit every day. This is because a large percentage of our Deaf students are Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian (27%). Parent Education We offer parents ASL classes on campus, online, and on neighboring islands. We also offer parents a Shared Reading Program (where staff teach parents, in their homes, how to read to their Deaf child), several parent presentations during the school year, and a Summer Family Learning Adventure (FLA). Working together we can greatly increase the level of success of our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Hawai’i School for the Deaf and the Blind is a community where all are empowered to succeed!
